Treasure Island is an adventure novel by Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson, narrating a tale of "buccaneers and buried gold". It was originally serialized in the children's magazine Young Folks between 1881 through 1882 under the title Treasure Island, or the mutiny of the Hispaniola, credited to the pseudonym "Captain George North". It was first published as a book on 14 November 1883 by Cassell & Co.
Treasure Island is traditionally considered a coming-of-age story, and is noted for its atmosphere, characters, and action. It is also noted as a wry commentary on the ambiguity of morality—as seen in Long John Silver—unusual for children's literature. It is one of the most frequently dramatized of all novels. Its influence is enormous on popular perceptions of pirates, including such elements as treasure maps marked with an "X", schooners, the Black Spot, tropical islands, and one-legged seamen bearing parrots on their shoulders.

No Boy Ever Really Outgrows Treasure Island

Treasure Island was written 130 years ago and it remains one of the great adventure tales of all time. I originally read it when I was about ten years old and, fifty years later, I recently re-read it in the Kindle edition. The fact that the book brings as much pleasure now as it did then is an indication of how good it really is. Stevenson truly hit the ball out of the park with this one.
Yo ho ho, and a bottle of rum!

Treasure Island is perhaps THE classic pirate’s tale. Robert Louis Stevenson, the author, created a rich story of adventure and treachery on the high seas all seen through the eyes of a boy named Jim Hawkins. Jim starts off as the son of tavern owners in a humble little port village. When an old seaman stays at the tavern, trouble soon follows him in the form of a pirate crew seeking revenge. I will not give away any more specific plot points, but events move forward to a great treasure hunt, treachery, and a surprisingly engaging story for adults as well as children.

How can you even review the ultimate pirate book of all time? I read it when I was 9 and loved it. I read it again when I was 34 and loved it again! (Actually, I read it several times between, as well.) Long John Silver is arguably one of the most Macchiavellian characters you will ever find between the covers of a book. (I’m mainly reviewing it to raise the average rating. Anyone who thinks this book is boring has to have a screw loose!) From the arrival of the mysterious Billy Bones, to the attack on the inn, to the sea voyage, to the mutiny, to the battle for the island, to the treasure hunt, even to the final fate of John Silver, this book is a stunning rollercoaster of suspense and adventure! I’d give it ten stars if I could.
A Great Swashbuckling Adventure Tale – Long John Silver

This is a story of a young man on a great adventure to a secret island with buccaneers. There is a good deal of swashbuckling adventure. The protagonist is a youthful male who is the narrator. The youth leaves home to go on a great sailing adventure. The style is late Victorian with no foul language. The chapters are short and it is easy to sit and read a chapter at a time.
Shiver me timbers, ’tis a good read

Nothing makes one feel quite so much like a child as reading over childhood classics, and yet the good ones evoke a feeling, not of childishness, but of childlikeness, if we can use such a word. These books bring us back to a simplicity and innocence that we may have difficulty accessing as adults, but which are nonetheless a return to ourselves as we are meant to be, and which our stresses and concerns and disappointments tend to obscure.

Treasure Island is a great read. This digital version is not the one I recommend. It’s only 122 pages long versus 273 pages in the hardcover version I have from Atheneum Books for Young Readers. I highly recommend the Atheneum hardcover version. It’s the best version of Treasure Island I’ve ever found, and has over a dozen beautiful illustrations, great for readers of any age.
Classic adventure story, perfect to read aloud to young boys who like pirates and treasure.
I read this aloud to my 8 year old son, who was fascinated by the gripping tale of how a young boy named Jim battled wits with the diabolical Long John Silver in a quest for treasure. The language was archaic, so you might prefer an abridged version – I was so busy concentrating on the language, I couldn’t always follow the story I was reading, but my son could follow it very well, just by listening.
Friendship, betrayal, murder, and piracy. This is the book that defines modern perceptions of pirates. Just read it. It’s great.
A classic in every sense of the word. From the cultural icons of Long John Silver, pirates with peg legs, parrots on shoulders, and lively sea shanties being sung by a crew…Treasure Island is the place where most ideas of what a pirate looks like came from.
Designed to quickly help your child overcome the anxious feelings.
