Based on the title, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. But it was free so I gave it a shot.

As a writer, detail is definitely not my major issue to address. That goes to revision or dialogue. However, I am always looking for ways to refine my technique and improve my wordcraft.

This is a very good book energetically written that will help both new and old writers improve their writing skills because it is good even for seasoned writers to be reminded to add proper details to writing, but not overdo it, and what kind of details to add, and when to do so. Kat Duncan tells what kind of details enhance a story or non-fiction writing, about action details that are best when drawn out, where to set the scene, different kinds of sensory details, when and how to insert dialogue, mannerisms, habits, and how to use details to make the reader identify with and like the character. She spices her book with many examples that show what are good uses and bad uses of details.

Kat gives some really good examples of description in this little book. It was well worth my time to read it. Thank you Kat. I especially liked the description that used the senses other than sight.

This is something I would never have thought to write about, and I’m thankful that Kat Duncan had the foresight to do so.

“Good details reveal something about the character or the situation of the scene. They are significant enough to stand out, but not in such a way as to distract the reader.” – this was from the Introduction. I agree and found this book to be helpful when crafting scenes. I also found

Writers Need Books Like This

Now that ebooks have opened the floodgates to all of us, there is a lot of pretty awful writing for sale. Many of these writers are diligently working on our craft, and this is the kind of book we need.

This is a great reminder.

This is an interesting, quick read. I really liked the reminder to not just use the 5 main senses, but others. Things like pain, emotion, location, etc. Great reminders for anyone struggling with a bland scene.

This is a concept I teach, and I’m glad to find someone seconding it. The point is that one must give the reader anchoring details to make them settle into the character’s skin, let them live the story, but you shouldn’t drown them in excess. Developing this ear or sense for the most vivid detail or three to set a scene will go faster for you if you read this.
