An absorbing mystery as well as a morality tale, the story of Pip, a poor village lad, and his expectations of wealth is Dickens at his most deliciously readable. The cast of characters includes kindly Joe Gargery, the loyal convict Abel Magwitch and the haunting Miss Havisham. If you have heartstrings, count on them being tugged.

I’ve always loved the story of Oliver Twist-now I finally have an illustrated copy I’m even happier. This book is an unabridged copy and is searchable-a great feature. The cover has a picture of Oliver, all ragged with his little bundle. The table of contents takes you to Charles Dickens’ preface, which is well worth reading, and to any chapter in the book. Alas, it does not take you to any of the illustrations, but they are beautifully rendered and very clear. I have the most basic Kindle and I have no trouble seeing all of the detail in the illustrations. The chapter headings list not only the number of the chapter, but the brief description Dickens wrote for each chapter, so that if you want to find a particular spot-say, when Oliver runs away to London, you can see that Chapter VIII has the summary “Oliver walks to London. He encounters on the road a strange sort of young gentleman.” This makes it very easy to go to any part of the book you want to read.

Fine Dickens Story, Disappointing Edition

Dickens is at his sardonic best here in descriptions of London workhouse conditions, the plight of the poor, and the arrogance of those charged with their care. Generally, the main characters are either purely good or purely evil. Only Oliver’s ultimate savior, Nancy, displays any nuance. Dialog is sometimes stunningly saccharine and inflated.

The sections dealing with the scum of the Earth characters are brilliant, and very believable

I read this when I was aged 12 on a dare. I was a bit young to attempt this. I basically remember that I didn’t know what was going on. I decided to reread it lo these forty years plus later and I have come to the following conclusions:

Obviously, the work itself is among the classics in English literature. Dickens’s genius is evident on every page. One might think prose from the 19th century would be stodgy. It’s not – far from it. In this book, I like the occasional illustration. It helps me visualize what Oliver’s world looks like. Read about how it was when child labor laws were non-existent and orphans were considered at the bottom of society. It makes you glad we live when we do.

Wonderful book

Great classical story by Charles Dickens. Amazing and pretty realistic. Hardships and happy times of Oliver Twist. Originally read it in Russian, and this is second time in English. Loved it.

A Good E-Book with Some Annoying Typos

This is a well-organized, nicely illustrated e-reader version of Dickens’ classic. My only complaint is the same one I have with many Kindle books–far too many typos. Sometimes I find myself re-reading sections twice before realizing a wrong word is to blame for my confusion. Nonetheless this is a very good book at an excellent price.

Long book but worth it

Charles dickens has a unique style that paints a picture so descriptive that I want to read the passage over again to feel the mood recapture what the characters were experiencing. Great story to illustrate why it is important to be of good cheer

Interesting story on the deplorable conditions of orphans and poor people in England

Interesting story on the deplorable conditions of orphans and poor people in England. makes you appreciate more humane political systems of today. the language is “old english” and at times hard to comprehend, otherwise enjoyable historic read.

I have never read Oliver Twist, and so I downloaded this version because it was illustrated and unabridged. I have read about 20% of the book, and I keep running into typos. While there are not many, the ones that are there are distracting. I googled a few sentences, and I confirmed that they are actually incorrect. So…..I’m gonna see if I can download another version. Too bad.
