This book is basically a collection of several thousand websites all about books and literature for children, teens and young adults.
I started reading books out of natural curiosity at about four years old. I don’t remember exactly how I learned to read. I think it was starting with simple coloring books with text and children’s books. By about six or seven, I was reading books like The Children’s Bible, The Call of the Wild, Black Beauty, Roy Rogers cowboy stories, etc. I never really stopped.
Back in my day in my formative years as a young adult, I read stuff like John Steinbeck, D.H. Lawrence, James Joyce (Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man), Ernest Hemmingway, Charles Dickens and Leo Tolstoy. These people wrote stories that tried to capture the depth of the human emotional experience and tried to help put the future course of humanity on a better course.
This book is my homage to the written word for children, teens and young adults.
I cover the children’s book business with lists of children’s book websites and children’s book publishers.
I give a pretty good database of children’s literature websites.
I tell you where to get lots of free children’s ebooks.
I cover audio books or what used to be called books on tape and tell to get lots of free ones for children like at youtube, librivox.org and other podcast websites.
Fiction and literature are usually considered two different things in any library.
Literature is considered the great works by authors in the past who tried to capture something important about the human condition.
Fiction is usually considered pop culture stories meant to entertain the masses like mysteries, romance novels, thrillers, fantasy, etc. It’s usually in a separate section of the library classified alphabetically by author names.
Virtually every library has a separate children’s section where they classify the nonfiction children’s books under the Dewey Decimal System then they have a section for children’s fiction classified alphabetically by the author’s last name.
Reading is the most basic form of education and knowledge. You must be a good reader to become an educated person.
There should be books, magazines and reading material to help a child learn to read then become good at it to become a lifelong readers because you like it.
Create a daily reading time where you and your child read together independently, each reading your own material. Read silently.
Have a home library of books. You can buy used ones on the cheap at used bookstores and garage sales.
Have books around the house.
Have comfortable, cozy reading chairs and a reading area.
There are lots of free audiobooks as podcasts on youtube and other places. Sometimes it’s better to listen than to watch because it activates the child’s imagination to create the images in his mind.
Get your child to read aloud sometimes.
Discuss what he reads with him.
Reader’s Theater is a fun activity to get several kids to act out a story they all read.
A literature circle is several kids talking about a story or book. You can have it like a club. Several likeminded kids read a book then meet once a week or so to talk about it. You can assign different roles like the summary guy who summarizes the book, the guy who asks questions of the other members, the guy who writes out a list of new words he learned and the summary guy who talks about what’s next.
Read aloud to your child like a bedtime story.
Find interesting books for your child. Do this by looking through children’s books that win awards or go to goodreads.com and read reviews.
Try read.gov. There are podcasts there.
Refer to the children’s book guide I’ve written.
Reading a book enables a child to improve reading ability because they now see new words again and begin to understand them.
Children's literature is at #808.80 at the library.
