An upstart city called Roma is fated one day to rule Greece…

Not if he can help it.
Alone and consigned to slavery in barbarian Italy, the Athenian general Demosthenes lays eyes upon the city destined to subjugate the known world. Once free, he leads a Greek army up the Tiber in a brutal assault on the young Republic. His star-born ally Thalassia, meanwhile, infiltrates the heart and household of a noble Roman Senator, her motives, as ever, her own.

If you have not read the novel Athenian Steel, then ROMAN ANNIHILATION serves as an excellent introduction without spoiling the plot of the full-length. If you have read it, then here is an 'alternate vision' of what might have been. The series, The Hellennium, takes place in an ancient world depicted with brutal realism, weaving threads of cosmic SF into bloody and graphic historical fiction. At the heart of the series is the ever-evolving, dysfunctional relationship between Demosthenes and Thalassia, whose 'anti-romance' will leave a trail of slaughter and ruin down the centuries.

If you're a fan of David Drake's Northworld series, or Gene Wolfe's Soldier series, you'll want to join Demosthenes and Thalassia as they cut a bloody path of destruction through the ancient world. Frequent readers of David Weber, David Gemmell, Michael Moorcock, and even Bernard Cornwell have also found much to love.

I am an unconditional fan of PK’s — he has basically “converted” me to this mixture of sci-fi and history, as he is a master at both — and a master of surprise with great writing.

Read this – but read "The Hellenium" first

My advice is to read this after Athenian Steel: The Hellenium. It’s basically an abandoned plot line that is entertaining if you liked “The Hellenium”.

Excellent read

This very short pre–novel sets up the series in an interesting way. It’s like stepping into the second volume of a complicated world-building exercise.while it explains a few things, it really set me up to go get the rest of the series. Damn! Now I have to find The time to read all of them in one sitting.

Well written followon

Great follow-up to Athenian Steel Hellennium this time in Roma. Attack of Rome reminded me of ancient city. Same characters as first book.

Good story

Well written, not such a fan of the extra explanations, but to each their own. I didn’t spend any money, but it wouldn’t have been wasted if I had.

I had just finished the saxon tales and was looking for a short series or two-part to ease my way out of the Bernard Cornwall way fandom, which I thought would be more difficult. Then I found this gem. You do not have to like history or sci-fi to get into this book, the story and characters themselves are the intrigue, the historical and sci-fi fill in as a fantastic addition. Fully worth the time and minimal price paid for. Great job on the books.
