For anyone who hasn't yet discovered Shane M Brown's writing, this is an excellent place to begin. This eBook contains both an anthology of eight short stories and then sample chapters from his novels, MELT, PLAZA and FAST.

One reviewer has generously described the stories as follows (paraphrased by author):

1) LUCY LUCY – An interesting world in which female clones ("Lucys") have replaced women who have apparently been killed off or made infertile by a virus.

2) LATE RETURNS – A very odd world in which access to books and reading itself is heavily regulated by the government, creating a new type of addiction in the process.

3) CATCHPHRASE – Imagine a world in which a government agency regulates product advertising down to the word with the power to shut down a product line or business at its whim.

4) IN STORE – A futuristic look at eco-radicals.

5) GARDEN LIGHT – A science fiction story of a man who picks up projected images broadcast to his home from a nearby building.

6) THE FUTURE GUN – A different type of alien story in which the initial contact changes the main character's life forever. But perhaps there's a purpose for his suffering?

7) LIVE – Reminiscent of The Running Man or The Hunger Games. Why are people running for their lives? How were they chosen? Is there a way out alive?

8) THE EARTH EQUATION – A futuristic murder mystery/love story in which people can survive for a few months at a time only by remaining in suspended animation for the rest of the year.

Special note: AFTER has an active table of contents, is approximately 80,000 words (including sample chapters from Shane M Brown's novels FAST, PLAZA and MELT), and displays seamlessly with Kindles and all other eBook reading devices. Combined, these stories have appeared in professional print publications, been nominated for national literary awards, been purchased for feature film adaptation, and appeared in national newspaper circulations.

I very much enjoyed these stories, all of them had believable characters on whom I developed an interest and for whom I cared.

This is a very entertaining collection of thought-provoking stories. I am a long-time subscriber to traditionally printed short story magazines, and have lately been trying some online content to see how it compares (both price and quality). This is the first collection of stories that I felt compelled to write a review about. The author did an incredible job of presenting different scenarios where the world will be drastically changed and humans forced to adapt. I liked every story. If you ever enjoyed reading magazines like Asimov’s Science Fiction, Analog, or Interzone, then you’ll really enjoy this. It’s better value and I’d honestly have to say that the originality of the stories exceeds the standards of much of the printed competition. Looking forward to the second collection.

This is the third Shane M Brown book that I have purchased and I was not dissappointed. The only negative is that I think I’ve seen one of these stories in another speculative fiction anthology, can’t remember which one. In any case I still enjoyed reading it again and the impact of the ideas and what ifs that Shane brings to life in each story was absorbing. I particularly enjoyed “In Store” and “The Earth Equation” and agree with another commenter that the latter would make a great movie – there’s lots of room to expand on the ideas and the central conflict is truly original.

Shorter than you think.

4.5 stars for the weird and imaginative sci-fi/dystopian future tales. I really liked them. 2 stars though for the fact this 310 page book is actually only 45% tales and the rest is excerpts from the author’s other books. Don’t get me wrong – the other books are good, but I got this to read great short stories (and they really are great), not to be advertised at.

An excellent collection of short stories

The author states that “these are the stories of what people will do AFTER” but with the exception of a few stories it really didn’t matter to me what triggered their present conditions. Considered in total this is a collection of well written stories though I definitely liked some more than others as described in my review. If possible I’d have given this book 4 1/2 stars. (Qualifier: having previously downloaded his two earlier works, the author was kind enough to provide me with a copy of this book with his sole request being that I give an honest review in return. I’ve done so below having received no other considerations.)

A Futuristic Mix of of Apocalyptic Stories

There are 8 stories of a almost identifiable future Earth. Thoughtful and for the most part attention grabbing, some are a little uncomfortable to contemplate.

I am a huge fan of science fiction and post-apocalyptic stories and this collection was right up my alley. Other reviewers have already given synopsis of these tales so I’ll just stick to my own opinions regarding the stories.

Another awsome read

What a great collection of short stories. Each one has a subtle twist and shows the world form different perspectives and possible futures. My favourite is Earth Equation which could easily be addapted into a fantastic movie. Never a dull moment on Shanes Books. Can’t wait to see what he comes up with next.

Pleasant break from the action

I was very interested in reading these short stories from Shane Brown, figuring I’d get a quick action-less interlude before reading MELT … and they didn’t disappoint. Each story came across as a Rod Sterling-level Twilight Zone episode. One or two didn’t quite hold my interest, but the rest were interesting tales of ‘post society-level event’. Without zombies. There are plenty of dystopian stories being churned out these days, and AFTER should be included in the ‘to read’ pile.

Small collection of short stories with a few making purchase worthwhile. Rated 7/10.

AFTER is a collection of (8) short stories with varying topics. LUCY, CATCHPHRASE, and EARTH EQUATION were my favorite of the eight stories included here. CATCHPHRASE’s story line about corporate advertising and crazy government restrictions fines for violations I liked the best. These are fairly quick reads, and you may find some of the other five stories to your liking also. It earns a 7/10 on my personal rating scale.
